Sam was born in the small mountain village of Averill in the state of Vermont to a family of hunters and outdoorsmen. During his childhood, Sam had loved the nearly untouched wilderness of northern Vermont. Since Vermont had not been victim to the destruction of nuclear bombs directly, the wilderness has remained pristine. The only problems to be had were from the weather, radioactive rain and snow seasonally ravaged the forests and streams. While growing and learning in the small community that had begun to develop around him, Sam had become fond of firearms and the skill of survival. And during the earlier years he had been taught with several other kids by an elderly teacher.
When he was old enough, Sam was able to further his education by choice, when a group of wanderers from New York had arrived at his village. In that group of wanderers were several advanced teachers who had come from a vault located somewhere in the Adirondack Mountain range in northern New York. Sam was lucky enough to find out that one of the teachers taught Sociology, Criminal Justice and was a weapons smith from the vault. Over the next five years, Sam was taught and he learned everything that professor had known. When those five years passed, the village of Averill had grown from a small community of only 50 people to an expanding city of 5,000.
Out of the new community of people, nearly 75% of them were hardened survivalists and warriors, the mayor of Averill, Mr. Knox Smith, decided to create a program that would turn the men of the city into honored soldiers. Sam was drafted and forced to take part in this new program to be one of the original test subjects, in return, he would gain the elite title of “Ranger” and not have to remain in the new “Army” if he didn’t want to. After a few months of the unimaginable training, Sam had achieved the title of Ranger and was able to continue with his life.
With a new militaristic nature in his head, Sam had taken the knowledge he had learned before he was a Ranger and created the G.M.B.L.E. or Green Mountain Boys Law Enforcement group after learning about the Civil War and the role Vermont had played. He was the new Chief of Police and began to crack down on the use of drugs such as Buff, Jet and Psycho. With his new authority he created a SWAT team and led them from house to house removing the unwanted contraband from the once pristine Vermont village. After nearly 150 arrests, Sam had been given the nickname “Jackhammer” Johnson on account of all of the doors he had breached with his custom made shotgun.
After a few years, the population of Averill had begun to dwindle down slowly due to the increased security and rejection of outsiders who were trafficking drugs around the area. Over the next few months the city would be ravaged by the weather, radioactive rain and snow would claim the lives of many civilians and soldiers. After losing his friends, Sam took his family to the forest where he thought they would be safer, it turns out that they were safer, from people that is. Sam had built his family a log cabin to stay in while he hunted the forest for food such as deer and bear. For only a few months, his family was able to survive the brutal winter of radioactivity, but eventually were victims to the snow and cold. Sam however had managed to survive with his Ranger training and childhood knowledge of survival.
Overwhelmed with the loss of his family, Sam contemplated his future for many hours and had come to a dead end. He was planning on suicide, quick and painless with his custom shotgun that he carried for so many years. Sitting on a stump in the gently falling snow, Sam was ready to pull the trigger when he hesitated and noticed the bushes in front of him began to rustle, he quickly drew his weapon up and pointed it at the bush. A lone wolf walked out of the bush, it’s black and silver coat covered in a layer of snow. Instead of pulling the trigger, Sam waited and aimed at the wolf for what seemed like a lifetime, but neither Sam nor the wolf moved. Thinking about his family and all he had lost, Sam began to cry and lowered his weapon, sat back down on the stump and completely disregarded the wolf. The wolf did not attack him and actually came up to his side and sat next to him while he cried. For the next few minutes, they sat together in the snow.
Finally, with all that had happened and all that he had been through, Sam decided to continue his life and made friends with the wolf that saved his life. He had planned to rebuild in the forest until the earth shook and the sky turned white with fire. An unexplained nuclear explosion had rocked the mountains of Vermont and the shock wave had caused mountains to crumble and trees to fall over; however the fire didn’t make it to Sam or Averill. Knowing that the fallout would reach the area soon, Sam took all he and his new partner could carry. He had named the wolf Dempsey, after his only son. Remembering something he had heard from one of the Averill residents, led him to think that some sort of civilization had began to develop on the West Coast, in San Francisco. Taking everything he had, the two survivors of the Vermont wilderness began their journey to begin their new lives.
